Burford Ontario has been incorporated into the County of Brant as of 1999 along with the town of Paris, Oakland, on and take it, and the former South Dumfries Township. Burford and surrounding area was founded by Canadians of German, Dutch and British descent and has a population of 1,940 as of the 2006 Cencus. Burford is located approximately 8 kms west of the City of Brantford along Highway #53. Nearby major centres are London, Ontario (70 kms away) and Burford is situated approximately 100 kms southwest of Toronto.
For many years the farmers of Burford enjoyed very lucrative living due to the widespread tobacco business. During the 1980s, when smoking became less popular, the economy slipped into decline. The newer thriving businesses in the Burford area are dairy, poultry, ginseng for Oriental markets and fish farming. Some of these operations are very large however many continue to be family run farms. As a result of the declining demand for tobacco, the population in Burford has suffered a loss, However migrant workers from Mexico and Jamaica are welcomed and integrated as part of the local economy.
Burford enjoys a small town feel with the center comprised largely by small businesses a post office, and a few financial institutions. Privately owned restaurants, coffee shops and the village vegetable market keep you coming back to a place where everyone knows your name.
The real estate market in Burford, is somewhat slower as a result of the size of the Village, however prices remain in line, with that of Brantford and area. Homes in the area range from small bungalows, older century properties all the way up to executive style residences.
Burford district elementary school is now housed in the former district high school building that was closed in June 2002. Local high school students are bust to either Paris district high school, Brantford collegiate Institute, assumption college in Brantford or St. John's college Catholic schools also in Brantford.
